Being an outcome of enlightenment, cartoons came to life with the Renaissance. At first it was a primitive art of portrait called “caricare”, but later it improved, became widespread and more influential in the hands of highly skilled humor artists.

It gave power to the art of posters, intermingled with graphical arts, made its appearance in museums, engaged in the cinema and TV, entered magazines, settled in the front pages of daily newspapers, acquired a say in the political arena by practicing its duty of criticism.

What kind of a person should the creator of such a widespread art that has an effective capacity in a wide perspective? What kind of skills should he possess in addition to the skills peculiar to himself? Undoubtedly, it is not possible for a human being to specialize in language, art, science, technology, politics and many other areas at once. However, he should not be totally alienated to these subjects, and have some knowledge and idea at the least about all of them.

It is possible to imagine a cartoonist, lacking intensive and systematic knowledge on every field and subject and the opportunity to reach a healthy synthesis, that is lacking culture?

Aydınlanmanın bir ürünü olan karikatür, Rönesans’la birlikte doğdu, başlangıçta ilkel bir portre sanatı olan “caricare” diye tanımlanan bu tür, sonraları usta mizah çizerleri elinde gelişti, yaygınlaştı, etkinlik kazandı.

Günümüzde afiş sanatına güç kattı, grafik resimle kaynaştı, müzelerde boy gösterdi, sinema ve televizyona el attı, dergilere girdi, günlük gazetelerin baş köşelerine yerleşti, siyasal alanlarda eleştiri görevini üstlenerek söz sahibi oldu.

Böylesine geniş perspektif içinde etkin bir işlevi olan bu yaygın sanatın yaratıcısı nasıl bir kişi olmalıdır?.. Kendine özgü yeteneklerinin yanısıra ne tür özelliklere sahip olmalıdır..? Bir insanın dil, sanat, ilim, bilim, teknoloji, siyaset ve birçok alanda birden uzmanlaşması şüphesiz olası değildir. Ama en azından yabancı kalmaması derinlemesine olmasa bile az çok bir bilgisi olması gerekir.

Her alanda, her konuda edinilmiş geniş ve sistemli bir bilgi ve bu bilgilerin sonucunda sağlıklı bir senteze varabilme olanağından, yani kültürden yoksun bir mizah çizeri düşünülebilir mi?..
